Discovering Puppy Mountain: The Viral Dog-Shaped Wonder in China

At first glance, it looks like just another beautiful mountain rising beside China’s Yangtze River. But then you see it. A forehead. An eye. A snout reaching toward the water. Suddenly, there’s a giant puppy resting along the riverbank. This unusual landscape has become known online as “Puppy Mountain,” and dog lovers around the world can’t seem to unsee it.

So, Where Is Puppy Mountain?

Puppy Mountain is located in Zigui County near Yichang, in China’s Hubei Province, overlooking the majestic Yangtze River. The mountain itself isn’t new, but the way someone looked at it certainly was.

In January 2025, Shanghai-based designer Guo Qingshan was hiking in his hometown. Later, while browsing through his photos, he noticed that one section of the mountainside looked remarkably like the head of a dog resting beside the river. He shared the picture on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, on Valentine’s Day, dubbing it “Puppy Mountain.”

And just like that, the internet did what it does best—it fell in love with the dog.

120,000 Likes in Just 10 Days

The original Puppy Mountain post reportedly received around 120,000 likes in only ten days. Meanwhile, the Chinese hashtag for Puppy Mountain attracted millions of views on Weibo. People began sharing older vacation photos of the same mountain. Many admitted they had stood in front of it before and never noticed the dog. Others started posting pictures of their own dogs beside the mountain photo, searching for four-legged lookalikes. Naturally, this sparked a wave of visitors traveling to see it for themselves. Some even brought their dogs along for the adventure!

What Does the “Puppy” Look Like?

That may depend a little on your imagination. From the right viewpoint, the mountain resembles a large dog lying down with its head near the Yangtze River. Guo described it as looking like the puppy might be drinking from the river, watching fish, or quietly protecting the Yangtze. We can see all three.

There appears to be a rounded head, a noticeable eye area, and a long snout extending toward the water. And once someone points it out? Good luck seeing a regular mountain again!

Why Do We Love Seeing Dogs Everywhere?

Puppy Mountain is a great example of something called pareidolia—our tendency to recognize familiar objects or patterns in things that are otherwise unrelated. It’s why we see faces in clouds, animals in rock formations, and expressions in the front ends of cars. But there’s something especially fitting about millions of people looking at an enormous mountain and deciding: Yep. That’s a dog.

Maybe dogs have simply taken over enough of our lives that we're starting to find them everywhere. On our couches. In our beds. Following us into the bathroom. And now, apparently, stretched across entire mountainsides in China.

Puppy Mountain Became a Real Tourist Attraction

The best part of the story may be what happened after the photo went viral. People began making trips specifically to see the formation from an observation area in Zigui County. One local visitor reportedly drove about an hour and a half and brought her two-year-old poodle along. She explained that she often travels with her dog and thought her pup and Puppy Mountain were a perfect match. That’s the kind of dedication to dogs we can appreciate!

What had been part of the landscape for generations suddenly became a destination for photographers—all because one person stopped long enough to notice a puppy hiding in the mountain.

Sometimes You Just Have to Look at Things Differently

Maybe that’s part of why the story became so popular. Nothing about the mountain suddenly changed. Someone simply saw something joyful that everyone else had been overlooking. And millions of people saw it too.

For those of us who love dogs, that’s probably not surprising. Dogs have a way of making ordinary moments a little more interesting. Apparently, they can even make mountains better.
